About Pakman

Pakman is a collective which developed following the publication in La Libre Belgique on the 2nd of August 2022 of a white paper entitled “Wanted: The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report” that denounced the climate denial entangling both civil society and political bodies.

The Pakman Collective (in reference to, amongst others, the voracious character which gobbles up everything in its path) is made up of citizens from every walk of life coming together to denounce climate denial and push every level of power to take, swiftly and democratically, the urgent decisions which are required by the situation.

In 2022, 50 years after the publication of the famous Meadows Report entitled “The limits to growth”, the international climate conference – COP 27 – will take place in Egypt from the 6th to the 18th of November. A new rendezvous of either hope or disillusion…

Even so, the situation is dire. Over the past few years, no continent has escaped extreme climatic phenomena : floods, typhoons, fires, heat waves, droughts, …

The ONU warns us that all these catastrophes will only grow in frequency and intensity. The cause? Climate change and the collapse of biodiversity – issues which are themselves caused and exacerbated by human activity and an inappropriate management of the risks.

The third part of the 6th IPCC report, published on the 4th of April of this year an entitled “Mitigation of Climate Change”, outlines many decisions which can be taken to reduce the negative consequences of human activity on our planet.

Despite these clear warnings and instructions, such decisions are still not being made.

Even though our government has been condemned for climate inaction (FR), even though the ONU has repeatedly called for putting a stop to the automatic spiral of destruction in which we are engaged, and regardless of the multiplication of warnings from many scientists and numerous protests all over the world, we continue to witness the denial and irresponsibility of our leaders.

That is why one of the first actions of the collective was to contact the members of the governments and the party leaders by email, to present the white paper to them and ask them to react to it.

Then, during COP 27, the Pakman Collective will erect a replica of the Rosetta Stone on the Schuman roundabout in Brussels, in the heart of the European quarter. This ton of blue stone will be engraved with a text in 4 languages, denouncing the past 50 years of inaction and political irresponsibility in the face of climate change.

This symbolic act will provide a location for debates, exchanges and meetings around the topic of climate denial, giving this urgent problem the visibility it really deserves.

The collective is ready to support initiatives from associations working for the environment / climate / biodiversity and ultimately towards the preservation of a society living in a sustainable way given the resources available on our planet.
